A selection of spindle moulders for sale

Exactly as its name implies, a spindle moulder machine is used to create basic moulding work, but it can also be used to make profiles, rebates and grooves on the edge of wood, composites or plastics. It is, undoubtedly, one of the most versatile pieces of equipment you can buy.

The beauty of a spindle moulder is that it is simple to use, shapes easily and delivers a high-quality finish every time. Whilst the most common types have a vertical or horizontal spindle, others have spindles or tables that tilt. There are additional options too, such as power feeds, tenoning tables and CNC controls.

Here at Kendal Tools, we have a range of spindle moulders for sale, including heavy-duty spindle moulders and reversible tilt spindle moulders.

As a brand, Sedgwick is renowned for quality, long-lasting machines that hold their value, but the SM255t is like no other. It features a backward tilting spindle which allows for safer working and enables users to machine workpieces of all sizes. There is also full use of pressure guards, without obstruction, and wood chips are directed into exhaust outlets in the machine base.

Alternatively, the spindle moulder machine from SIP has been designed to suit a range of woodworking tasks (particularly end moulding, profiling and tenoning). It has a large cast iron table with a tilting spindle which maximises flexibility, and a heavy duty fence and clamping system that holds intricate pieces in places. This is a great choice for trade professionals and serious DIYers.

If you want a less expensive machine take a look at the Charnwood range, they include packages with extras such as cutter block & cutters, router collet, sanding drum and wheels.

How does a spindle moulder work?

To ensure success and to reveal the correct shape, the spindle moulder must be accurately set and positioned before you start. This can involve, depending on the model, choosing the correct profile knives, limiters, and blanks, and fitting them onto the corresponding heads. During use, the timber passes through the machine, while the spindle moulder moulds the shape by cutting away the excess wood on all four sides in one pass through the machine – revealing the desired profile of the project. The spindle is controlled by a rise-and-fall mechanism operated by a handwheel which determines how much and where the cutter profile cuts the timber. Here at Kendal Tools & Machinery, we’re more than happy to share our expertise with you if you need spindle moulder recommendations or coordinating accessories to complete your project. Simply call us or fill in our enquiry form, outlining your requirements, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Is a spindle moulder the same as a router table?

The main differences between a spindle moulder and a router table are twofold: • The type of cutter they use A router table uses router bits with a permanent shank attached to the cutter and a router mounted under the table. A spindle moulder, on the other hand, has a spindle that accepts a cutter head and is built for heavier-duty use versus the router table. • How they are powered Spindle moulders use a motor with a belt drive to control the spindle and deliver greater levels of torque than a router table. Other general differences include: • Spindle moulders are generally the quieter of the two – but still require users to wear ear protection. • Spindle moulders can handle larger projects while maintaining effective precision for each piece. • Spindle moulder cutters can experience a longer life but do tend to be more expensive than router bits. Do I need a tilting spindle moulder?

Most spindle moulders have vertical or horizontal spindles, and some have a tilting function – but how important is it? The main benefits of a tilting spindle moulder are: • It can increase your cutting capabilities using the cutting tools you already have. • You can press stock to the table or the fence than using complicated jigs for one-off projects. • You can create bevels at any angle. Opting for a tilting spindle moulder may well be a good way of futureproofing your workshop, as it can be used tilted and horizontally or vertically, depending on the model chosen – increasing its usefulness. If you have any other questions about tilting spindle moulders, give us a call on 01539 733 774 or drop us an email at info@kendaltools.co.uk and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Is a spindle moulder suitable for beginners?

While spindle moulders are more often utilised by trades, thanks to their increased size and weight, beginner woodworkers are perfectly capable of using a spindle moulder for projects. The increased capacity of the spindle moulder makes it ideal for a range of tasks, including those considered too large for a router table or those that require a gentler sweeping cut. It is worth noting that as the spin speed can be vastly increased on a spindle moulder versus a router table, and because of the risk of ejection, it would be a good idea to ensure beginners have appropriate PPE and an experienced mentor to show them how to use the machine safely to make sure the risk of accidents is limited.
