What is a wood lathe chuck, you might ask?

Put simply, a chuck in woodworking is a device that grips onto the wood you are using on the lathe whilst it spins. It reduces the need for screws which can mark the workpiece and prevents unnecessary movement – allowing you to work more efficiently.

There are several types of wood turning chucks on the market today and we understand that choosing the best one can be easier said than done. That’s why our team is here to guide and advise you every step of the way.

Different types of Wood Lathe Chucks

If you’re to make an informed choice, you need to know a little bit about the different types; how they work and their mechanisms.

Here we look at the three most common types:

  1. Four-jaw independent chucks

The least expensive type of wood lathe chuck. It can clamp square, rectangular, round and irregular shaped materials between two and all four of the available jaws. Please note, using this type of chuck can be a slow and grinding process – one that requires lots of practice.

  1. Four-jaw combination chucks

With aspects of both four-jaw independent chucks and scroll chucks, four-jaw combination chucks are ideal for repetitive work on square, rectangular or irregular pieces where no fine-tuning is required.

  1. Three or six-jaw scroll chucks

The three or six-jaw scroll chucks are operated using a key that calibrates all the jaws at the same time. These wood turning chucks are well-known for being precise, fast and efficient but are not as accurate as the four-jaw chucks.

It’s worth knowing that, once you’ve made your mind up and decided on a specific brand, you will need to buy the accessories that are compatible with that particular chuck. The last thing you want to do is buy something that seems to be a bargain, only to find that it’s not compatible with your wood lathe – meaning you’ll have to spend a small fortune to get the appropriate accessories and extras.
