Bench grinders are excellent pieces of machinery that are extremely useful to have around your workplace or home workshop.

These clever tool sharpening machines use spinning abrasive wheels to grind and shape the material. As a result of having two wheels with different abrasive grades, they are great for sharpening blunt tools, such as blades, chisels, knives, scissors, and shears.

Here at Kendal Tools & Machinery, we are proud to provide some of the best bench grinders on the market – guaranteed to keep your tools razor-sharp and fit for use.

So, why not take a look at the collection below and identify the best one for your needs? We promise you won’t be disappointed.

A comprehensive range of tool sharpening equipment

As a leading stockist of tool sharpening machines, we supply bench grinders from renowned manufacturers, including:

Boasting an angle guide, honing paste, and setting angle gauge, Scheppach’s Tiger 2000s and 2500 whetstone bench grinders are ideal for DIY beginners. The honing wheel can also be removed to aid the process of sharpening longer knives and irons.

Please note that whetstone bench grinders must be fastened down securely before use to prevent movement when sharpening tools.

Some of our other bench grinders and tool sharpening equipment come with their own distinctive features. For example, the SIP machines are all supplied with a free extra wire brush wheel, whilst the Draper GD650A bench grinder is sold complete with a sanding belt and light, not to mention a host of other adjustable and safety features.

No matter what type of bench grinder you’re searching for – with something to suit all requirements – we’re confident that you’ll find it here at Kendal Tools.

What can bench grinders be used for?

Put simply, a bench grinder is a special type of grinding machine that’s used to drive abrasive wheels to sharpen tools. It’s a must-have for DIY and trade workshops. The grinding wheels come in different sizes with varying grits, which makes them perfect for everything from grinding and sharpening blunt tools and metal objects to cutting hard items and wood, removing rust, and shaping and buffing objects. Feel free to contact the team at Kendal Tools for more information about bench grinders and their uses.

What size bench grinder do I need?

Bench grinders typically come in two sizes: 6-inch and 8-inch. Whilst both sizes are easy to set up and convenient to use, they differ in price – with the larger machines costing the most. A 6-inch bench grinder operates at regular speeds and has sufficient power to help you execute the most common home improvement tasks. It can be used for a wide range of DIY and professional projects and can be purchased for an affordable price. An 8-inch bench grinder, on the other hand, is perfect for professional use and heavy-duty work. It’s worth pointing out that it’s a lot slower in terms of operation, yet it requires fewer wheel changes and maintenance. So, although you’ll pay more for an 8-inch bench grinder, you’ll save money in the long run because you won’t have to change the wheels as frequently. To determine which bench grinder is best for sharpening your tools, call Kendal Tools on 01539 733 774 or email info@kendaltools.co.uk, and we’ll get back to you with detailed information.

Why is tool sharpening important?

A tradesperson must have the right tools for the job, but they also need to ensure that they are sharp and ready to use. Dull blades will cause wear and tear, which could ultimately put a strain on your core muscles and damage your power tools. However, allocating enough time to sharpen your tools before using them will allow you to make clean, smooth-edged cuts. After all, sharp tools are safer and more efficient to use than blunt ones. And tool sharpening can help prolong the life of blades, meaning you won’t need to replace them as often. If you’d like to know more about tool sharpening and how our bench grinders can help, get in touch today.

Can’t I sharpen my tools by hand?

Like when you sharpen your kitchen knives by hand using a knife sharpener or whetstone, woodworking tools can be sharpened by hand. However, it is generally accepted that you will get the best finish using equipment such as a bench grinder. This is because: 1. It is harder and less efficient to do by hand As machine parts and tools are designed to be much sturdier than a set of kitchen knives, sharpening and maintaining an edge will be physically much harder work and will take much longer doing it by hand – without any real benefit. Similarly, while your average home may have only a few kitchen knives that need sharpening, you may have a whole workshop of tools that require sharpening – making it a much longer task. 2. You’ll only need one machine While it may seem like an investment, a single, good-quality bench grinder can be purchased for less than £170 and provides excellent value for money based on how often you will use it. If you decide a bench grinder is for you, browse our selection and add them to your online basket or reach out for our personal recommendations – you can call us or send us an email.

Do I need a belt linisher as well as a bench grinder?

Also called a belt sander, some bench grinders come with belt linishers. Belt linishers work to smooth a workpiece, creating a level, even surface and can also polish materials including wood, metal, and some plastics. They remove less material, in this case from tools you are sharpening. A belt grinder on the other hand runs much faster and therefore removes more material. If you complete any of the following activities, you could consider a belt linisher or sander: • Trimming to a scribed line • Sanding rough surfaces • Levelling surfaces • Freehand rounding and shaping Kendal Tools & Machinery can share our expertise with you if you are considering a belt linisher or sander – simply call us or fill in our enquiry form, outlining your requirements, and we’ll get back to you with product recommendations.
